Learner perezhivanie and mutual advisor-advisee development through advising: A longitudinal case study of JSL learner

This study analyzes the perezhivanie of one second-language learner (Chinese L1) who studied Japanese as a second language and engaged in her learning experience in a Japanese cultural setting through yearlong language advisory sessions. Perezhivanie, a Russian term, and a Vygotskian concept, is employed in the study to observe L2 learner development and to capture the bidirectional influences of the characteristics of agency and the environment. The data analyzed come from two sources: (a) our written correspondence, including email exchanges, from before the study was conducted and (b) audio-recorded data of six face-to-face/ online advisory sessions on a bimonthly basis with a particular focus on her perezhivanie. By applying perezhivanie as a unit of analysis that avoids the cognition-or-emotion and person-or-context dichotomies, the findings revealed the developmental processes of one L2 learner and focused on how both advisor and advisee mutually transform the specific social situation into a social situation of collectividual development through yearlong advisory sessions. Notably, the participant evaluated her original experience negatively at first, but eventually, she learned to value the failure and reinterpreted the initial experience. The significance of the study is to contribute to describing the detailed case of learner perezhivanie with a particular focus on entrance exams in East Asian sociocultural settings.

Through advising in language learning, this study describes two Japanese secondary school students’ (Ai and Yu: both pseudonyms) longitudinal trajectories of socioculturally mediated emotions in four dimensions. To investigate types of emotions, the research integrates multiple qualitative methods and Plutchik’s wheel of emotions, thus acknowledging both contextually complex and longitudinally dynamic aspects of emotions. Throughout a year of 19 advisory sessions, the amount of time spent was 1,263 minutes (Ai’s 12 sessions = 891 minutes; Yu’s 7 sessions = 372 minutes), and the number of emotional incidences identified was 358 (201 for Ai; 157 for Yu). Among multiple findings, the most notable was that both participants experienced convergence of emotions: the one process from diversified to less diversified emotions was caused by longitudinal dynamics of emotions in Ai’s case and by contextual complexity of emotions in Yu’s case. The study concludes by suggesting a tentative four-dimensional model of emotions to capture trajectories of advisees’ emotions from multiple perspectives. This model can help advisors to understand advisees’ emotionality and, therefore, to implement emotional support appropriately and continuously.

Although characteristics of academic lectures in English-medium instruction (EMI) are well-documented within the framework of the functional and/or corpus-based approach, they have not been studied in terms of how they are affected by the classroom context; therefore, our study explores how similarly and/or differently instructors deliver their EMI lectures, considering the environment each instructor is put in. We video-recorded the lectures of three content professors for a total of about 180 minutes while observing and taking field notes of each class. We applied thematic analysis with no pre-determined framework and divided each instructor’s discourse into several categories in an inductive way. Our findings show that the instructors’ speech rate and their discourse organization varied greatly depending on the overall context, and that no general discourse patterns were observed. We suggest that the characteristics of EMI lectures be identified not only linguistically but also holistically, considering the classroom context.

外国語教師の心的体験：アドバイザーとの対話による協働的主体性

外国語教師の主体性を養うことはより適切な教師教育を行ううえで重要である。社会文化理論における心的体験（perezhivanie）は主体性を支える重要な要素であるが、教師が自身を取り巻く社会文化的環境からどのような心的体験を形成し、そのうえでどのように主体性を発揮しているかを調査している研究は日本の外国語教育の文脈で非常に限定的である。本研究の目的は外国語教師の主体性と心的体験双方に着目した対話的セッションを行い、参加者の主体性がどのような心的体験に支えられて発揮されたのかを明らかにすることである。参加者と複数回のセッションを実施し、参加者の外国語教授経験に伴う心的体験を明らかにした。
