    As the period of Mao ended, this process of strong integration also began to undergo change. With the increasing pace of reform and the opening up of the economy by the end of the Deng Xiaoping era, when marketisation began to be carried out in earnest, centrifugal forces begin to operate with greater strength. The de-ideological stance followed by reform and opening, marketisation and, accompanying that, the appearance of plurality, the increasing desire for local autonomy from the centre, as well as tension arising from friction between the local authority and the centre and the rise of ethnic nationalism in the border regions, all worked as disruptive forces. It must be emphasised that for those who dreamed of a unified China, the separatist movement of Taiwan is working to strengthen this trend towards disintegration. But is there a possibility that this trend will lead to the break-up of China? To answer this question I will focus on the following three factors, to discuss the problem of integration and disruption in the last twenty years and in the short-term future: 1. The Communist Party of China (CCP) as the bearer of the ideology of unity and as a unifying political body (centripetal force). 2. The relationship between the centre and the local authority (centrifugal force). 3. Ethnic nationalism (centrifugal force).
