    This study adopts a microstructural approach to examine the effect of Japanese official intervention in the yen/dollar foreign exchange market. Our empirical results show that the number of informed traders after the series of interventions is significantly larger and the degree of the market maker's reaction to the order flow and the cost of informed trading in the post-intervention period are significantly smaller than those in the pre-intervention one. This finding implies that frequent and intense intervention promotes competition among the informed traders. We interpret these data to conclude that this competition lowers the degree of information asymmetry in the market. JEL Classification: D82; E58; F31 © 2013 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.     This paper examines the welfare comparisons between a freely floating, a managed floating, and a pegged exchange rate regime. We compare the expected loss under these regimes by modifying and generalizing Hamada's (2002) model to accommodate intervention policy. We consider the de jure and de facto classifications, where the former is defined by the officially stated intentions of the monetary authorities, while the latter is based on the actually observed behavior of the nominal exchange rate. We first examine the exchange rate regimes from the central bank's policy stance and the actual exchange rate policy. Next we assume that the regime which the private sector perceives according to an official announcement may be different from the one adopted actually by the central bank. We examine nine combinations of the de jure and de facto regimes. We interpret that, whenever they are different, there is informational friction between the central bank and the private sector. We show that the welfare level of a small country under freely floating is no less than that under other regimes, and that with some restrictive conditions, the de facto pegged or de facto managed floating is close to freely floating. This partly explains 'Fear of floating' and 'Fear of pegging'. © Springer-Verlag 2009.

    This article examines an endogeneity issue within the Optimum Currency Area (OCA) theory. According to the cost-benefit analysis, we found that there are the upper and the lower bounds in the degree of monetary integration for a monetary union to be created. We also found that a country may secede from the monetary union, depending on its degree of integration. A country may also secede when production specialization is facilitated with monetary integration within a framework of the OCA line. We also consider the endogeneity of the OCA Index, and applied our analysis to the optimum number of world currencies.

    This paper examines the effects of interest rate differentials as inflowing information into the forex market on the yen/dollar exchange rate and unexpected trading volume by a structural VAR model. The impulse responses show that the short-term interest rate differential affects the exchange rate through (a) UIP with little change in unexpected trading volume, and (b) different expectation revisions at different points in time with a high transaction volume. The effects of long-term interest rate differential on the exchange rate appear instantaneous with high trading volume, reflecting instantaneous reshuffling in international portfolio holdings of long-term assets. © 2004 Elsevier B.V.     This paper examines an intervention index in the foreign exchange market, applying the quarterly data of the Singapore economy during the 1990's. The intervention index measures intervention activity as the proportion of exchange market pressure relieved by exchange market intervention. Singapore is selected because (1) it is a small open economy and consistent with this empirical study, and (2) it has been affected by speculative attacks. The specific interest is the effectiveness of intervention conducted by the Singapore authority to mitigate exchange market pressure. It is concluded that the overall intervention activity is surprisingly successful over the sample period. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

  • 先物プレミアム・パズルの解明：摩擦要因の分析

    本研究では、国際金融論において未解決な問題(パズル)の一つとして周知の先物プレミアムパズルについて、その原因の一つであるといわれている摩擦要因に関して研究を行った。摩擦要因もいろいろと考えられるが、本研究においては外国為替市場における取引の際に発生する取引費用に注目した。先行研究によれば、この取引費用は注文加工費用、在庫保有費用、及び情報費用から発生するといわれている。そしてこの取引費用は、取引数量の変化を通じて為替レートに正の影響を及ぼすことが示されている。　カバーなしの金利平価(UIP)からの乖離がこの取引費用のために発生しているという仮説をたて、先行研究において先物プレミアムパズルが確認されている16の高所得国について、1982年1月から1998年12月までのデータを用いて統計的な推定と検定を行った。経済学的な仮説は、UIP乖離があるバンドの上限あるいは下限を超えると、外国為替市場には裁定がはたらきUIPへ復帰する動きが発生するという仮説である。推定のために用いたモデルは非線形モデルの推定に用いられるSTARモデルであり、対称的なESTARモデルと非対称性を考慮できるLSTARモデルを特定化した。　その結果、16カ国の標本中、4カ国でESTAR、11カ国でLSTARモデルによる乖離過程の近似が選択された。これらの結果が意味することは、UIP乖離は非線形過程に従うこと、そしてUIPからの乖離が大きくなればなるほど速いスピードでUIPに収束する力が市場にはたらくことである。また、バンド内ではUIPは必ずしも成立していないことも解った。さらに、非対称的な過程が選択された11カ国では、取引費用が先物プレミアムパズルの原因になっている可能性のあることが確認された。

  • 先物プレミアム・パズルの理論的・実証的検討

    　先物プレミアム・パズルについては、大別して（１）静学的なＣＡＰＭを援用する分析、（２）利子率の期間構造理論を援用する分析、そして（３）消費ベースあるいは貨幣ベースの一般均衡分析を援用する分析の３つがあるように思われる。（１）や（２）の古くからの分析手法に加えて、（３）は理論的にも難解で、分析は十分に行われているとはいえない状況にあります。私の研究においては、比較的最近の（３）の接近方法を手がかりにして、先物プレミアムに観察される非線形性を説明しようとするものであります。　現在までのところ、異時点間の個人の最適化問題に不確実性を導入し、それを回避するために予算制約条件に貨幣残高の保有も認めるモデルを考えております。開放経済を前提として、各国民は外国の通貨を外国為替の手段として保有することが出来るものとして定式化を行っております。その結果、ある程度のところまでは意味のありそうな最適解が得られるように思います。ただし、（１）その解の開放経済で経済学的に意味するところ、更に（２）そこから得られる経済学的インプリケーション、また（３）これを拡張して、少し応用問題を取り込むことが出来ないか等に関して、更に研究中であります。また、本研究を通じて、先物為替レートとは、直物為替レートとの比較において、一体どのようなものであるのかという、より基本的な問題に対する解答も見えてきたように思います。今までの結論では、やはりマネタリーな要因で決定されるような性質のものという結論を得ておりますが、もう少し本研究を継続して、更にもう一歩一般化したモデルで、これまでに得られた結果を再確認してから、さらに分析を進めたいと考えております。

  • 為替レート・ダイナミックスの研究:確率差分方程式による解法

    １．為替レート決定理論の現代理論であるアセットアプローチによれば、為替レートは前向きの性質を持ち、従ってジャンプ変数であるという結論が導かれている。この結論は、もちろん合理的期待形成に基づいているが、実証研究では、そのような変数が得られないため、当然のことであるが極めて不自然な、過去のデータを用いざるを得ないことになる。本研究では、このような極めて不自然な為替レート決定の現代理論を是正するために、コンシステントな動学モデルから、経済学的に意味のある結論を導くことを目的にしていた。選択したモデルは、ドーンブッシュのオーバーシューティング・モデルで、微分方程式ではなく、確率差分方程式で定式化し直してみた。２．解法の方法はラグ演算子を用いて係数行列の逆行列を計算するに際して、ルベーグ積分を用いたフーリエ変換の反転公式を用いて、係数を求めようと試みるものであった。その場合に、モデルの外生変数と確率的な誤差項は共分散定常的と仮定することが出来れば、為替レートと物価指数を内生変数とするモデルでは、係数行列が２行２列となり、合計４つの係数を反転公式から求めればよいことになる。内生変数間の相互関係から、１つの係数に対して、確率変数がとりうる値域内の任意の閉区間における値を指定することによって、残りの係数に対しても陽表的な解を得ることが出来た。この結果の意味することは重大であり、合理的期待に基づく為替レートといえども、すべての「過去」の動きと共に、「将来」の動きの期待値に依存して、今日の動きが決定されることが示された。３．さらに、この解法を、もう一つの有力な為替レート決定の現代理論であるポートフォリオ・バランス・モデルに適用して、同様の手順で解いてみた。オーバーシューティング・モデルのときのように簡単ではなかったが、所期の目的である経済学的に意味のある解は得られた。

  • 商品先物市場における期待の役割

    １．商品先物市場における期待の役割を明示的に示すために、商品先物市場へ参加する主体をその機能によって①ヘッジャー、②投機家、③在庫保有者、④消費者に分類し、次いで前二者による商品先物の需要表と供給表を定式化した。　さらに、在庫需要表及び消費需要表もなるべく簡単な形で定式化を試みた。　消費需要表以外は、一般に先物及び現物価格の将来の期待値、あるいは期待将来現物価格と現行先物価格の格差にも依存するものであるとして、期待の役割を強調するような定式化を試みた。　定式化に際しては、モデルを解くことが主目的なので、需給表は全て線形で定式化した。　さらに先物及びストックに関する２本の市場需給均衡式を課することによって、所与の価格期待の下での均衡先物価格と均衡現物価格の半誘導形を導出した。　このような単純なモデルでも、半誘導形の外生変数の係数の符号は、厳しい仮定の下でしか決定できないことが解った。　いくつかのさらに厳しい仮定の下で、期待の需給に及ぼすルートと、その方向について、ある程度のことが明確になった。２．基本的には本来動学的モデルで決定されるべき現物及び先物価格であるので、これまでの研究を通じてわかったことは、モデル自体を動学モデルで定式化し直す必要があるかも知れないということ、そして、その場合には効用関数からの最適化が求められるかも知れないということになりそうである。　さらにまた、実証研究を念頭に置いて少し複雑な外生変数の効果を考慮して今回定式化したモデルをもう少しスリム化して、あまり厳しい仮定を置かずに明示的な結論が得られるように再定式化を試みることなども、将来的な研究計画として考える必要がありそうであるということが明らかとなった。

  • 国際マクロ経済における総供給関数の役割

    　概要を見る

    　国際マクロ経済学において、総供給関数の果たす役割について解明したいと考え、特定課題研究助成を申請致し、この１年研究に集中致しました。　総供給関数をどのように定式化したらよいかについては、過去の研究の蓄積を参考としていろいろ考えました結果、効率賃金モデルを開放経済に応用し、そして為替レートと物価水準の期待を内生化した小国モデルを構築し、幸いにもその誘導形を導くことができました。その結果、完全資本移動性下のマンデルの結果、すなわち金融政策は国内景気対策としては有効であるが、他方財政政策は無効であるという結果に対して、むしろ金融政策が無効になり、また財政政策にいたっては縮小的な効果を及ぼすことがあることを示すことができました。金融政策が無効となることにつきましては、金融政策により為替レートが減価し、物価水準上昇の期待から将来の為替レートも減価すると期待され、したがって利子率は不変のままで供給が反応しないことがわかりました。しかし財政政策は名目為替レートを増価させることにより物価水準を下落させ、その結果実質為替レートをむしろ減価させることが示されました。効率賃金モデルに基ずく総供給関数は実質為替レートの減少関数となることが証明されているので、財政政策はマンデルの結果よりもなお悲観的なものになってしまうことを示すことができました。　また、このモデルにおける非不胎化介入は、中期的に実質産出量に影響を及ぼさないことを示すこともできました。そして、非不胎化介入があると、予期された財政政策の相対的な有効性は低下し、また金融政策については無効になることを示すこともできました。
