After the Sino-Japanese war, a lot of Chinese intellectuals moved to the coastal cities that the Japanese troops had withdrawn. They promptly established bases for publishing media, theater, and movies. Next, due to the civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, an intellectual outflow to Hong Kong and Taiwan occurred. During this chaotic period, the literary ideology of the Communist party had not completed yet. Therefore, there were diverse and fruitful achievements in physical and visual art as well as in literature. Further, we revealed the process of establishing the initial infrastructure of art education. Finally, we got research results of 26 academic papers, 54 research papers and 14 books (including co-authored).

This study deals with auditory elements in films produced or screened in the former Japanese colonies, to examine their backgrounds and functions during the World War II. As a preliminary research, the state of remaining films has been confirmed, while articles on film music in newspapers and magazines have been compiled into a database. The analysis of such texts and discourses clarifies (1) commissions to compose music for films newly made in the colonies, (2) trends in adopting existing musical pieces for them, (3) filmmakers’ policies on music, and (4) influences from cultural censorship on film music.

We’ve been doing research on the anti-Japanese artistic activities under Japanese occupation or invasion in the 1940s. At present, we found that Chinese intellectuals or artists had to select their ways as the invasion of the Empire of Japan : to cooperate with the Japanese, to resist them, or to be a spy. Some danced to contribute to the Chinese army, others composed popular songs for the Japanese people or for the Chinese victims, and others produced anti-Japanese dramas. In many cases, these dancers, musicians, writers, movie-makers and actors worked together.
