     概要を見る

This article examines the presentation of Muslim rulers from the early crusading period, 490540/10971146 in six of the main chronicles written during the first half of the seventh/thirteenth century. It discusses the themes, ideas and topoi in each, demonstrating that the historians appear to have been divided into two camps over their presentation of these rulers, based on their personal views of the rulers of their time. The article also examines why this division may have occurred, and considers its ramifications for modern scholarship of Arabic historiography, Islamic history and the history of the Crusades, in both the sixth/twelfth and seventh/thirteenth centuries.

  • The life of Aq-Sunqur al-Bursuqi: some notes on twelfth-century Islamic history and thirteenth-century Muslim historiography

    TURKISH HISTORICAL REVIEW   2 ( 1 ) 39 - 56  2011年  [査読有り]

     概要を見る

This article examines the career of the Turkish emir Aq Sunqur al-Bursuqi, who was active across a wide region of the Middle East in the first half of the twelfth century. In so doing, it highlights important aspects of the Crusades and Counter-Crusade more widely during this period. It also analyses the presentation of al-Bursuqi in the historical chronicles which form the basis of studying the early twelfth century, in order to further understanding of the late-sixth/twelfth and early-seventh/thirteenth century societies in which they were written.

  • Towards a Typology of Medieval Islamic Historiography

    2020年

     概要を見る

The past is always alive, and the way in which people understand and present their past tells us much about their society and culture. The aim of this project was to investigate how Muslims in the medieval period saw themselves through close examination of their historical writings. In particular, it was to do three main things. First was to form the basis of a KAKENHI grant application to investigate the phenomenon of typology (the deliberate drawing of parallels between ancient, religiously significant occurrences and the present being described) in medieval Islamic historiographical works and establish the methodological, theoretical, and source bases for such an application. Second, it was to obtain digital copies of the relevant manuscript material for this project, held in libraries in the UK, in order to have access to all relevant sources. Thirdly, it was to produce a journal article that will act as a pilot study, on how Saladin’s campaigns against the crusaders (1187-1193) are compared to Muhammad’s battles against the pagans of Mecca, submitted to a top journal.

  • The Islamic Historiography of the Crusades

    2019年

     概要を見る

This project's aim was to provide the bibliographical and methodological bases for a KAKENHI grant application for a project into how medieval Muslims wrote about the Crusades and non-Muslims in the period 1097-1291, something that builds on my many preliminary investigations published over the last ten years. This is extremely important because the period of the Crusades still provides a main basis for contemporary Muslim perceptions of and interactions with the ‘West’ and ‘Westerners’ (including Japan and the Japanese); thus, this project would help further cross-cultural understandings between the Muslim and non-Muslim worlds today. Its main objectives were: 1) to build up a definitive bibliography of the relevant primary source material for the KAKENHI project via research into the manuscript holdings of libraries around the world; and 2) to develop the methodology to be used in that project and the related academic events (workshop, conference papers, etc.), through discussions with leading experts in the field. In order to produce a full bibliography for the project, I went to the UK and examined Arabic manuscript catalogues from libraries around the world in order to locate material that has not been published or utilized thus far; this will be added to my own already extensive knowledge of the published primary source material, developed ever since my MA studies fifteen years ago. The creation of the definitive primary source bibliography for the planned project will form the basis for my research over the next decade.

  • Responses to Globalisation in the Early-Modern Period: Vittorio Cassar and the Roman Inquisition on Malta

    2018年

     概要を見る

The aim of the project was to use one case study, the life of Cassar, to help determine how people in the early-modern period reacted to and interacted with the manifestations of globalisation in this period, the first era of full globalisation. As such, I visited Malta in order to locate documents related to the Maltese architect Vittorio Cassar (d. c. 1610). These documents are housed in a number of different libraries in Malta, primarily the archives of the Roman Inquisition on Malta, the notarial archives, and the archives of the Knights Hospitaller in the National Library of Malta. Having spent six weeks in Malta, I have located and digitized a vast number of documents either directly or indirectly related to Vittorio Cassar. Over the next few months, I will study each of the documents in detail in order to attempt to fully understand how Cassar responded to the people, ideas, and objects that entered Malta in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Having understood Cassar’s reactions, I will compare them to contemporary reactions to globalisation in order to go some way to showing how historical research can help understand society today.
