  • The Social Mechanisms of Violence: A Theoretical Perspective

    2020年

     概要を見る

The present research aimed to shed light onthe social mechanisms of violence by exploring the concept of emergence.Emergence, which is the concept used to describe when a social phenomenon ismore than the sum of its parts, was used to explain the interplay between thedifferent manifestations of violence at the structural and individual level. The research aimed to expose certain elements that cannot be explained byfocusing on one side alone. The act and social phenomena of harming others hasbeen a topic that has been treated throughout the entire spectrum of the socialsciences but what has baffled researchers is that there are characteristics instructural violence that cannot be found in the violence done at the individuallevel and vice-versa. The most notable characteristic being theperpetrator-less aspect of structural violence and the dissipation ofaccountability. Even at the individual level, properties such as (un)intentionalityand unintended consequences of action also undergo complex social processeswhen the harm is committed by collective and organizational agents. The resultsof the present research were presented in the academic conferences of the  IV International SociologicalAssociation Forum of Sociology and 2020 American Sociological Association Annual Meeting both conductedonline due to the Corona virus pandemic.

  • Reconciliation and Violence: The Perpetrator-Victim Relationship

    2019年

     概要を見る

The issue of reconciliationis the extension of a practical problem that arises from the theoreticalanalysis of violence. The present research considered the theoreticalimplications that arise from the relationship that exists between perpetratorsand victims. The main objectivewas to find a practical approach to the situations that emerge from complexsocial situations of violence. This necessity becomes apparent because bytheoretically analyzing the relationship between perpetrators and victims, traditional theory dictated the existence power relation that to a certainextent inculpate the victim. Therefore, sociological theories of agency wereapplied to explore possible practical solutions to the problem ofreconciliation. The understanding that sociological theories sheds on thefreedom and constraints of individual actions and social structures provides a keyunderstanding of how and to what extent accountability is distributed giving hopeto reconciliation. As direct outcomes of the present research, one academic article is under review and a project proposal for community development is in preparation.

  • Modern Theory of Violence: A Re-Examination of the Structure of Irresponsibility

    2019年

     概要を見る

The objective of the present research is toshed light on the mechanisms of modern societies and organizations byreexamining Masao Maruyama’s concept of the structure of irresponsibility (無責任の体系). Maruyama developed the concept whilearguing that the structure of irresponsibility was a unique social process thathappened only in Japan. Varioussociological theories were used to analyze modern bureaucratic structures withthe arguments used by Maruyama to develop the concept of structure ofirresponsibility. Specifically, it was compared to Ian Kershaw’s concept of the absentdictator that describes Germany’s bureaucratic structures during the context ofWW2.Theoutcomes of the present research can be divided broadly into two parts: 1)discussions began with researchers in Germany to establish a possible jointresearch project and 2) a research paper will be presented in the Theorysection of the International Sociological Association in 2021.

  • A Theoretical Examination of Accountability in Complex Social Situations of Violence

    2018年

     概要を見る

In complex social situations of violence, where violence is both agency-driven and perpetrator-less, it becomes extremelydifficult to determine who is to blame. gives rise to the problem ofaccountability. The aim of this paper is to theoretically explore the socialmechanisms that accountability undergoes within complex social situations ofviolence. The act and social phenomena of harming others has been a topic thathas been treated throughout the entire spectrum of the social sciences but whathas baffled researchers is that there are characteristics in structuralviolence that cannot be found in the violence done at the individual level andvice-versa. The most notable characteristic being the perpetrator-less aspectof structural violence and the dissipation of accountability. Even at theindividual level, properties such as (un)intentionality, unintendedconsequences of action and the types of evil which are nonautonomous andautonomous also undergo complex social processes when the harm is committed bycollective and organizational agents. In relation to the present research, one paper was presented at the Violence and Society Conference in London and one paper was published in the European Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences.
