  • Attending a Sports Club Can Help Prevent Visual Impairment Caused by Cram School in Elementary School Children in Japan

    Longer durations for near-work activities, such as studying, worsen eyesight. In contrast, outdoor exercise is effective in reducing the risk of developing myopia. Despite these findings, however, the interaction between studying and exercise in eyesight has not been quantitatively evaluated. Moreover, since there is a culture of attending lessons in Japan, it is important to investigate the relationship between elementary school activities, such as cram schools or sports clubs, and vision. Therefore, in this study, we examined whether attending cram schools and/or sports clubs is associated with the use of glasses among elementary school students. We conducted a survey among 7419 elementary school students in Tokyo, Japan using a food education questionnaire. A logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between wearing glasses, an objective variable, and attending sports clubs and cram schools. Sex and school year were considered confounding factors. The results of this study showed that students who attended only sports clubs were more likely to be categorized into the “not wearing glasses” group (p = 0.03, OR = 1.45), whereas those who attended only cram schools were more likely to be categorized into the “wearing glasses” group (p = 0.008, OR = 0.67). In addition, students who attended both cram schools and sports clubs were more likely to be categorized into the “not wearing glasses” group than those who only attended cram schools (p = 0.28, OR = 0.85). Our findings indicate that attending not only cram schools but also sports clubs may prevent deterioration of eyesight. Parents and health care providers need to take these findings into account in order to prevent visual impairment in children.

    <title>Abstract</title>
    <bold>Background: </bold>As internet use becomes more widespread, the screen time (ST) of elementary school students increases yearly. It is known that longer durations of ST can affect obesity, physical activity, dry eye disease, and learning ability. However, the effects of ST just before bedtime have not been clarified. Therefore, we examined ST duration and timing effects on elementary school children. <bold>Methods: </bold>We conducted a survey of 7,419 elementary school students in Tokyo, Japan using a questionnaire on food education. ST duration and timing (just before bedtime) served as the explanatory variables, and the relationship between obesity, physical activity, dry eyes, and learning ability was analyzed using logistic regression analysis. Gender, school year, height, and weight were considered confounding factors. First, we examined whether ST duration and timing were related to each objective variable, using a univariate model to examine all variables. Thereafter, we performed multivariate logistic regression analyses for all variables showing a significant difference in the univariate models.<bold>Results:</bold> The results showed that the relationship between the ST duration and obesity, physical activity, and learning ability was statistically significant. The relationship between ST timing and obesity, dry eyes, and learning ability was also statistically significant. Therefore, ST timing has a greater effect on dry eyes, and ST duration has a greater effect on academic performance. <bold>Conclusion: </bold>Our findings indicate that ST in school children is related to obesity, physical activity, dry eyes, and learning ability, and they suggest that not only the duration but also the timing of ST is important.

  • Ingestion of Helianthus tuberosus at Breakfast Rather Than at Dinner is More Effective for Suppressing Glucose Levels and Improving the Intestinal Microbiota in Older Adults

    To date, nutritional studies have focused on the total intake of dietary fiber rather than intake timing. In this study, we examined the effect of the timing of daily Helianthus tuberosus ingestion on postprandial and 24 h glucose levels, as well as on intestinal microbiota in older adults. In total, 37 healthy older adults (age = 74.9 +/- 0.8 years) were recruited. The participants were randomly assigned to either a morning group (MG, n = 18) or an evening group (EG, n = 17). The MG and EG groups were instructed to take Helianthus tuberosus powder (5 g/day) just before breakfast or dinner, respectively, for 1 week after the 1-week control period. The glucose levels of all participants were monitored using a continuous glucose monitoring system throughout the 2 weeks. The intestinal microbiota was analyzed by sequencing 16S rRNA genes from feces before and after the intervention. There were no significant differences in the physical characteristics or energy intake between groups. Helianthus tuberosus intake led to decreases in tissue glucose levels throughout the day in both groups (p < 0.01, respectively). As a result of examining the fluctuations in tissue glucose levels up to 4 hours after each meal, significant decreases in the areas under the curves (AUCs) were observed for all three meals after intervention, but only in the MG (breakfast: p = 0.012, lunch: p = 0.002, dinner: p = 0.005). On the other hand, in the EG, there was a strong decrease in the AUC after dinner, but only slight decreases after breakfast and lunch (breakfast: p = 0.017, lunch: p = 0.427, dinner: p = 0.002). Moreover, the rate of change in the peak tissue glucose level at breakfast was significantly decreased in the MG compared to the EG (p = 0.027). A greater decrease was observed in the change in the blood glucose level after the ingestion of Helianthus tuberosus in the MG than in the EG. Furthermore, the relative abundance of Ruminococcus in the MG at the genus level was significantly higher at baseline than in the EG (p = 0.016) and it was also significantly lower after the intervention (p = 0.013). Our findings indicate that Helianthus tuberosus intake in the morning might have relatively stronger effects on the intestinal microbiota and suppress postprandial glucose levels to a greater extent than when taken in the evening.

  • Effect of the Intake of a Snack Containing Dietary Fiber on Postprandial Glucose Levels

    To examine the effects of the intake of a snack containing dietary fiber under free-living conditions on postprandial glucose levels in older adults, nine healthy older adults aged 76.9 +/- 1.6 years (mean +/- standard error) completed two crossover trials: 1) regular snack (BISCUIT) intake and 2) intake of snacks with a high dietary fiber content (DF-BISCUIT). In both trials, each participant consumed either BISCUIT or DF-BISCUIT between lunch and dinner time for 1 week. During the intervention, the blood glucose levels of all the subjects were observed using a continuous glucose monitoring system. Lower 24 h blood glucose levels were yielded in the DF-BISCUIT than the BISCUIT trials. Moreover, compared to the BISCUIT trials, the blood glucose levels after dinner and areas under the curve (AUCs) were significantly decreased in the DF-BISCUIT treatments. The blood glucose levels and AUCs after the intake of the next day's breakfast were suppressed in the DF-BISCUIT treatments compared to those in the BISCUIT trials. Our data indicate that the intake of snacks with a high dietary fiber content under free-living conditions is an effective way to restrain postprandial glucose levels and that the effect lasts until breakfast the next day.

  • Consumption of Biscuits with a Beverage of Mulberry or Barley Leaves in the Afternoon Prevents Dinner-Induced High, but Not Low, Increases in Blood Glucose among Young Adults

    We examined the impact of consuming biscuits with a beverage of powdered mulberry or barley leaves in the afternoon on postprandial glucose levels at dinnertime among young adults. A total of 18 young adults participated in a partially double-blinded, randomized crossover trial over 2 weeks, consuming either: (1) no biscuits; (2) a biscuit; (3) a biscuit with a beverage of powdered mulberry leaves; or (4) a biscuit with a beverage of powdered barley leaves, as an afternoon snack followed by a standardized test dinner. Glucose levels were recorded after each meal. Results showed intake of biscuits with a beverage of mulberry and barley leaves significantly reduced postprandial rises in glucose after their immediate consumption and dinner, though there was no direct relationship between the glucose levels at the two meals. Compared to those with low glucose levels, participants with high glucose levels at dinner showed a stronger second meal effect, that was attributed to the mulberry or barley leaves, and were also more likely to have lean body weights and prefer evenings. Our findings indicate that eating snacks alongside mulberry or barley leaves is an effective way to suppress postprandial glucose levels in young adults with high glucose levels who prefer evenings.

  • Effects of Timing of Acute and Consecutive Catechin Ingestion on Postprandial Glucose Metabolism in Mice and Humans

    We examined the effects of the timing of acute and consecutive epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and catechin-rich green tea ingestion on postprandial glucose in mice and human adults. In mouse experiments, we compared the effects of EGCG administration early (morning) and late (evening) in the active period on postprandial glucose. In human experiments, participants were randomly assigned to the morning-placebo (MP, n = 10), morning-green tea (MGT, n = 10), evening-placebo (EP, n = 9), and evening-green tea (EGT, n = 9) groups, and consumed either catechin-rich green tea or a placebo beverage for 1 week. At baseline and after 1 week, participants consumed their designated beverages with breakfast (MP and MGT) or supper (EP and EGT). Venous blood samples were collected in the fasted state and 30, 60, 120, and 180 min after each meal. Consecutive administration of EGCG in the evening, but not in the morning, reduced postprandial glucose at 30 (p = 0.006) and 60 (p = 0.037) min in the evening trials in mice. In humans, ingestion of catechin-rich green tea in the evening decreased postprandial glucose (three-factor analysis of variance, p < 0.05). Thus, catechin intake in the evening more effectively suppressed elevation of postprandial glucose.

  • When and How Should Chinese Pregnant Women Exercise? A Longitudinal Study in China

    This study aimed to examine when and how physical activity (PA) influences gestational weight gain (GWG) and infant birthweight (BW) by considering the PA's total volume, timing, intensity, and type, controlling for the influence of energy intake. A total of 1272 participants in different stages of pregnancy were recruited from hospital. The associations between PA and GWG or BW in the latter half of pregnancy were significant. Women with the highest PA volume in the third trimester had significantly lower risks of inadequate and excessive GWG by 69% (OR = 0.31, 95%CI: 0.10-0.91) and 67% (OR = 0.33, 95% CI: 0.12-0.91), respectively, compared to women in the lowest quartile. Women who achieved the recommended moderate intensity of PA during their second and third trimesters, independent of total volume of PA, had infants with significantly lower BWs compared to those who did not (beta = -0.15, SE = 66.33, p = 0.04; beta = -0.20, SE = 64.54, p = 0.01, respectively). Therefore, the effects of total volume and intensity of PA on GWG and BW were different. Interventions to prevent inappropriate GWG and macrosomia may need to set different priorities and timing regarding total volume or intensity of PA.

  • Physical activity and dietary intake among Chinese pregnant women: an observational study

    Background Physical activity (PA) and dietary intake are important modifiable factors associated with health outcomes. However, Chinese pregnant women's PA and dietary intake are only vaguely understood. The aim of this study was to reveal the characteristics of PA and dietary intake of Chinese women in different trimesters as well as the associations between PA and dietary intake. Methods This is a cross-sectional observational study. PA, dietary intake, and demographics of 1077 Chinese pregnant women were measured. The Chi-square test, Kruskal-Wallis test, multiple logistic regression, and multiple linear regression were used for data analysis. Results About 57.1% of the participants met the international guideline for PA. Household activity and occupational activity contributed the most to the total PA, while sports/exercise contributed little. The mean energy intake of the participants was 2008 +/- 748.0 kcal. Most participants had normal energy intake, but they obtained excessive energy from fat (mean = 41.7 +/- 8.7%). PA was not found to be significantly associated with dietary intake. Further, the participants who were unemployed during pregnancy (OR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.55-0.95; p < 0.05) or had no exercise habits before pregnancy (OR = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.47-0.80; p < 0.01) were less likely to meet the PA guideline. The participants in the third trimester (OR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.03-1.99; p < 0.05) were more likely to meet the PA guideline compared to those in the first trimester. The older participants (> 30 years) showed higher dietary intake than the younger (< 25 years) participants (p < 0.01). Conclusions The total PA of Chinese women during pregnancy mostly consists of household and occupational activities, but little sports/exercise. Starting exercise before pregnancy may help women achieve adequate PA during pregnancy. Moreover, these women consumed an excessive amount of fat and their diet intake varies by age.

    [Purpose] Little is known about the effectiveness of daily physical activity on depression biomarkers in older adults. This study aimed to investigate the effects of increased daily physical activity for 8 weeks on depression biomarkers in postmenopausal women. [Participants and Methods] Thirty-eight postmenopausal females were randomly assigned into a control or an active group and were asked to wear a uniaxial accelerometer for 8 weeks. Blood samples were obtained at baseline and at the end of the intervention. During the intervention, the active group was asked to increase their physical activity level above their usual lifestyle whereas those in the control group maintained their daily lifestyle. [Results] After the 8-week intervention, the step counts of the participants in the active group increased. The serum concentration of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor and serotonin increased significantly in the active group, but not in the control group, as compared with baseline values. The serum concentration of derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites and biological antioxidant potential did not change after the intervention in either group. [Conclusion] These findings may suggest that promotion of daily physical activity in postmenopausal women has a positive impact on depression without any change in oxidative stress.

  • Effects of Meal Timing on Postprandial Glucose Metabolism and Blood Metabolites in Healthy Adults

    We examined the effects of meal timing on postprandial glucose metabolism, including the incretin response and metabolites in healthy adults. Nineteen healthy young men completed two trials involving blood collection in a fasting state and at 30, 60 and 120 min after meal provision in a random order: (1) morning (similar to 0900 h) and (2) evening (similar to 1700 h). The blood metabolome of eight participants was analyzed using capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry. Postprandial glucose concentrations at 120 min (p = 0.030) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide concentrations (p = 0.005) at 60 min in the evening trials were higher than those in the morning trials. The incremental area under the curve values of five glycolysis, tricarboxylic acid cycle and nucleotide-related metabolites and 18 amino acid-related metabolites were higher in the morning trials than those in the evening trials (p < 0.05). Partial least-squares analysis revealed that the total metabolic change was higher in the morning. Our study demonstrates that a meal in the evening exacerbates the state of postprandial hyperglycemia in healthy adults. In addition, this study provides insight into the difference of incretion and blood metabolites between breakfast and dinner, indicating that the total metabolic responses tends to be higher in the morning.

  • Effects of Chios mastic gum and exercise on physical characteristics, blood lipid markers, insulin resistance, and hepatic function in healthy Japanese men

    The effects of Chios mastic gum (Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia) and exercise on physical characteristics, blood lipid markers, insulin resistance, and hepatic function were investigated in healthy, non-smoking Japanese men aged ae<yen> 40 years. Participants were allocated to control (C, 5 g/day placebo powder, n = 7), mastic (M, 5 g/day mastic powder, n = 7), or mastic plus physical activity groups (M + PA, 5 g/day mastic powder and 30-min exercise three times/week, n = 7), and measurements were taken at baseline, 3 and 6 months. Serum triglycerides were significantly reduced at 3 months in M and M + PA compared with C (P < 0.05). Serum insulin and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance values were significantly reduced at 3 and 6 months in M + PA, and at 6 months in M, compared with C (P < 0.05). These results indicate that Chios mastic gum intake for 6 months reduced serum triglyceride and insulin concentrations, and additional exercise enhanced the effect on insulin.

    Objectives The objectives of the present study were to translate the English version of the Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire into Chinese (PPAQ-C) and to determine its reliability and validity for use by pregnant Chinese women. Methods The study included 224 pregnant women during their first, second, or third trimesters of pregnancy who completed the PPAQ-C on their first visit and wore a uniaxial accelerometer (Lifecorder; Suzuken Co. Ltd) for 7 days. One week after the first visit, we collected the data from the uniaxial accelerometer records, and the women were asked to complete the PPAQ-C again. Results We used intraclass correlation coefficients to determine the reliability of the PPAQ-C. The intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.77 for total activity (light and above), 0.76 for sedentary activity, 0.75 for light activity, 0.59 for moderate activity, and 0.28 for vigorous activity. The intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.74 for "household and caregiving", 0.75 for "occupational" activities, and 0.34 for "sports/exercise". Validity between the PPAQ-C and accelerometer data was determined by Spearman correlation coefficients. Although there were no significant correlations for moderate activity (r = 0.19, P > 0.05) or vigorous activity (r = 0.15, P > 0.05), there were significant correlations for total activity [light and above; r = 0.35, P < 0.01)] and for light activity (r = 0.33, P < 0.01). Conclusions for Practice The PPAQ-C is reliable and moderately accurate for measuring physical activity in pregnant Chinese women.

    To study the effects of different exercise intensity performed at different exercise times on lipid metabolism response during prolonged exercise. Nine young men performed endurance exercise at different exercise intensities (60% VO(2)max or Fatmax) in the morning (9 am to 10 am) or evening (5 pm to 6 pm); blood samples were collected before exercise and immediately and one and two hours after exercise completion. Expired gas was analyzed from the start of exercise until two hours after exercise completion. There were no significant changes in catecholamine (adrenaline and noradrenaline) and free fatty acid levels between morning and evening trials for each endurance exercise intensity. However, the morning and evening trials both exhibited significantly higher lipid oxidation at Fatmax than that at 60% VO(2)max. These results suggest that exercise at Fatmax offers greater lipid oxidation than that at 60% VO(2)max, regardless of exercise timing.

    中等度強度の持久性運動が唾液中の生化学成分や歯周病原細菌に及ぼす影響について検討したので報告する。27〜52歳で週2回以上の運動習慣をもつ健常男性12名を対象とした。身体測定および運動負荷試験、臨床診査、細菌検査、生化学検査を実施した。検討の結果、中等度強度の持久性運動を行った結果、唾液中の歯周病原細菌と生化学成分が有意に減少していた。このことから、運動が唾液中の歯周病原細菌と生化学成分、それに関連して引き起こされる歯周病態に何らかの変化を及ぼす可能性が示唆された。今後、重度歯周炎患者を対象として、唾液中の遊離ヘモグロビン、血清IgG抗体価や他の歯周病原細菌を調べ、運動と歯周病態との関係性をさらに詳しく検討する必要があると思われる。

  • Diurnal variation in the diving bradycardia response in young men

    The present study aimed to examine diurnal variation of the diving bradycardia responses on the same day.Eighteen young men (age 26 +/- A 2 years; height 174.2 +/- A 6.0 cm; body mass 70.2 +/- A 8.1 kg; body fat 18.0 +/- A 3.8 %; mean +/- A standard deviation) participated in this study. Oral temperature, heart rate variability (HRV) from 5-min of electrocardiogram data, and diving bradycardia responses were measured at 0900, 1300, and 1700 hours daily. All participants performed diving reflex tests twice in the sitting position with the face immersed in cold water (1.9-3.1 A degrees C) and apnea at midinspiration for a minimum of 30 s and as long as possible, in consecutive order.Oral temperature was found to be less in the morning (0900) than in the afternoon (1300) and evening (1700). In the frequency domain parameters of heart rate variability, the natural logarithms of high-frequency power were higher in the morning than in the evening. All participants showed bradycardia response to the two diving reflex tests. The peak values of R-R interval during the diving reflex test both for as long as possible and 30 s were longer in the morning than in the afternoon and evening.Our results indicated that the maximal bradycardia during the diving reflex test exhibits a diurnal variation, with peak levels at morning and gradual decrease towards the evening. The HRV indexes show the same variation.

  • Effects of Acute Endurance Exercise Performed in the Morning and Evening on Inflammatory Cytokine and Metabolic Hormone Responses

    PurposeTo compare the effects of endurance exercise performed in the morning and evening on inflammatory cytokine responses in young men.MethodsFourteen healthy male participants aged 24.3 +/- 0.8 years (mean +/- standard error) performed endurance exercise in the morning (0900-1000 h) on one day and then in the evening (1700-1800 h) on another day with an interval of at least 1 week between each trial. In both the morning and evening trials, the participants walked for 60 minutes at approximately 60% of the maximal oxygen uptake ((V) over dotO(2max)) on a treadmill. Blood samples were collected to determine hormones and inflammatory cytokines at pre-exercise, immediately post exercise, and 2 h post exercise.ResultsPlasma interleukin (IL)-6 and adrenaline concentrations were significantly higher immediately after exercise in the evening trial than in the morning trial (P < 0.01, both). Serum free fatty acids concentrations were significantly higher in the evening trial than in the morning trial at 2 h after exercise (P < 0.05). Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between the levels of IL-6 immediately post-exercise and free fatty acids 2 h post-exercise in the evening (r = 0.68, P < 0.01).ConclusionsThese findings suggest that the effect of acute endurance exercise in the evening enhances the plasma IL-6 and adrenaline concentrations compared to that in the morning. In addition, IL-6 was involved in increasing free fatty acids, suggesting that the evening is more effective for exercise-induced lipolysis compared with the morning.

    Elevated postprandial hyperglycaemia and oxidative stress increase the risks of type 2 diabetes and CVD. Green tea catechin possesses antidiabetic properties and antioxidant capacity. In the present study, we examined the acute and continuous effects of ingestion of catechin-rich green tea on postprandial hyperglycaemia and oxidative stress in healthy postmenopausal women. Participants were randomly assigned into the placebo (P, n 11) or green tea (GT, n 11) group. The GT group consumed a catechin-rich green tea (catechins 615 mg/350 ml) beverage per d for 4 weeks. The P group consumed a placebo (catechins 92 mg/350 ml) beverage per d for 4 weeks. At baseline and after 4 weeks, participants of each group consumed their designated beverages with breakfast and consumed lunch 3 h after breakfast. Venous blood samples were collected in the fasted state (0 h) and at 2, 4 and 6 h after breakfast. Postprandial glucose concentrations were 3% lower in the GT group than in the P group (three-factor ANOVA, group x time interaction, P<0.05). Serum concentrations of the derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites increased after meals (P<0.05), but no effect of catechin-rich green tea intake was observed. Conversely, serum postprandial thioredoxin concentrations were 5% higher in the GT group than in the P group (three-factor ANOVA, group x time interaction, P<0.05). These findings indicate that an acute ingestion of catechin-rich green tea has beneficial effects on postprandial glucose and redox homeostasis in postmenopausal women.

    【目的】運動実施時間帯の違いが持久性運動中および運動後の代謝応答に及ぼす影響について検討した。【方法】健康な若年男性10名を対象に異なる運動実施時間帯(朝[09:00〜10:00]・夕方[17:00〜18:00])において最大酸素摂取量60%で60分間の走運動を実施し、運動前、運動負荷終了直後、運動負荷終了2時間後に採血を行い、運動開始から運動終了1時間後まで呼気ガス分析を行った。【結果と結論】夕方試行では朝試行に比べて、運動終了直後でアドレナリン、成長ホルモン濃度、運動終了2時間後で遊離脂肪酸濃度の高値を示した。夕方の持久性運動は、運動後に脂質代謝亢進に作用するホルモンの分泌を高め、遊離脂肪酸濃度を増加させることが示唆された。(著者抄録)

    <p>In mammals, the circadian rhythms have been shown to regulate several physiological functions, including body temperature, sleep-wake behavior, physical activity, hormonal secretions, and metabolism. These processes are controlled by circadian clock genes, and abnormal circadian rhythms are associated with the development of obesity, diabetes, and lifestyle-related diseases. In addition, the timing of behaviors such as food intake, exercise, and stress influence circadian rhythms, including clock gene expression in peripheral tissues. Therefore, the interaction between nutrition and the circadian clock is so-called "chrono-nutrition" is poised to become an important research field of chronobiology. In this review, we review the effects of a timed-nutrition on circadian clocks and their timing-dependent effects on physiological functions.</p>

    運動は心血管疾患や糖尿病のリスクを低減させることが示されている。近年、持続血糖測定器の開発により24時間の血糖値測定が可能となった。先行研究において血中インスリンや血糖値は日内変動を示すことから運動時間帯を考慮する必要がある。しかし、異なる運動実施時間帯における持久性運動が血糖値の日内リズムに及ぼす影響ついては不明な点が多い。そこで、本研究では異なる運動実施時間帯に着目し、持久性運動が血糖値の日内リズムに及ぼす影響について検討した。
    健康な若年男性10名を対象とし、ランダムクロスオーバーで行っている。本研究は週3回運動を行う短期間介入を実施している。朝試行(8時~10時)または夕試行(16時~18時)において最大酸素摂取量の60%の強度で60分間の持久性運動をトレッドミルを用いて行った。朝試行と夕試行の間は2週間以上のWash-Out期間を設定している。各試行の介入前後に採血行い、インスリンやカテコラミンなどの血中ホルモンの分析を行っている。さらに、各試行の運動介入前に持続血糖測定器を装着してもらい、運動中および運動後の血糖値変動および日内リズムの分析を行っている。

    代謝応答に関連する内分泌系および神経系は日内変動を示す。そのため、異なる運動実施時間帯において代謝応答に違いが見られる可能性がある。しかしながら、朝と夕方の運動実施時間帯の相違が代謝関連指標および血中脂質に与える影響について不明な点が多い。
    我々は運動実施時間帯の違い一過性持久性運動時における代謝関連指標および血中脂質に及ぼす影響を検討し、夕方の一過性持久性運動が朝の一過性持久性運動と比較して脂質代謝亢進に影響を与える血中ホルモンの分泌が高まり、夕方の運動後の脂質分解を亢進することを明らかにした。一方、肥満の予防・改善の観点から考えると、異なる運動実施時間帯に行う長期間の持久性運動が代謝関連指標および血中脂質に及ぼす影響について検討する必要がある。異なる運動実施時間帯における長期間の持久性運動が代謝関連指標および血中脂質への影響を解明することは、より的確かつ効果の高い運動処方を考える上で極めて重要であると考えられる。
    そこで、我々は中年肥満男性31名(年齢47.5 ± 1.1歳、身長173 ± 0.8 cm、体重83.1 ± 1.6 kg、BMI 27.7 ± 0.4 kg/m2、体脂肪率26.7 ± 0.6 %、mean ± SE)を対象とし、3群【(朝運動群8名:8時~11時)、(夕方運動群12名:17時~20時)、(コントロール群11名:日常生活の維持)】に分けて朝と夕方の異なる運動実施時間帯における長期間の持久性運動が代謝応答に及ぼす影響について検討している。本研究は、介入前測定が終わったところであり、現在進行中である。

     本研究では、運動実施時間帯の違いが血糖値および体内リズムに及ぼす影響について検討を行う予定であったが、コロナの影響により予定どおりの研究遂行ができなかったため、既存の採取データを用いた追加分析をおこなった。健康な若年男性8名を対象とし、中等度強度の持久性運動(3回/週)の短期介入(1週間)を行った。その結果、朝・夕の持久性運動ともHDL-Cの改善が見られた。一方、中性脂肪およびApoBでは、夕の持久性運動でのみ有意な改善が見られた。したがって、朝の持久性運動に比較して夕の持久性運動が血中脂質の改善のためにより有効かもしれない。

     本研究では、朝または夕の異なる運動実施時間帯における血糖値の日内変動および血中指標に及ぼす影響について検討を行った。健康な若年男性10名を対象とし、一過性および1 週間の短期介入を行った。その結果、一過性および短期介入とも夕の持久性運動が朝の持久性運動に比べて運動後の血糖値の日内変動が穏やかであることが見られた。しかし、朝と夕で統計的な有意差は見られなかった。また、短期介入で夕試行においてのみ介入前に比較して介入後、インスリン分泌刺激ホルモンであるGIPおよびGLP-1の増加傾向が見られた。したがって、朝の持久性運動に比較して夕の持久性運動が日中の血糖値コントロールのためにより有効かもしれない。
