    平成29年度は、当初の計画どおり20世紀前半に活躍した日本人舞踊家、伊藤道郎、新村英一の国際的公演活動と舞踊学校と教育に関する国内外の一次史料の閲覧収集に着手し、調査研究・分析を行った。具体的には、国内では主に当時の新聞記事等の閲覧収集、国外ではニューヨーク公共図書館、ロサンゼルス公共図書館、フランスの国立図書館、ロダン美術館、スイスのダンスコレクションアーカイヴなどの調査・研究機関を訪れ、伊藤道郎、新村英一に関する一次史料の閲覧収集と調査分析を行うことで舞踊の形成、舞踊教育、相互交流について新たな知見を得ることができた。以上の作業を通じて得た研究成果を7月初旬にギリシアで開催された国際学会において"Two Japanese Male Dancers Who Fascinated the West in the Twentieth Century: Michio Ito and Yeichi Nimura"という題目で主に伊藤道郎、新村英一両者の舞踊公演と教育に関する類似点と相違点に焦点をあて発表することができた。また10月にアメリカで

    In this research project, I focused on three Japanese dancers, Sada Yacco Kawakami, Hanako (Hisa Ota) and Michio Ito who had all performed in the US and Europe and had also known Isadora Duncan, the pioneer of modern dance and very well known dancer in the early twentieth century. I used historical newspapers, films, magazines and photographs to verify these three Japanese dancers’ performances in the West and how their performances were reviewed and evaluated. In doing so, I also focused on the aspect of cultural exchange and the image of Japan in the West. With this approach and methodology, I was also able to reveal the confluent relation between Isadora Duncan and the three Japanese dancers

      In this research project, I examined the influence of Isadora Duncan’s early experiences on the formation of her new dance style and the cultural context of late nineteenth-century America. I researched materials that related to Isadora’s childhood as well as historical newspapers, magazines, and films.   In the latter half of the nineteenth century, millions of immigrants arrived in the United States. In the arts, a division developed between urban elite culture and working-class entertainment. Wealthy people enjoyed opera, while ordinary workers flocked to vaudeville. Most Americans viewed dance as a social amusement, not an art form. Ballet schools existed in the United States during this period; however, the form that was taught was more like theatrical dance.   Historical newspaper articles revealed that Isadora’s early performances mostly took place in wealthy women's private salons, rather than in theatres. Unhappy with the situation of the arts in the United States and the public's lack of appreciation of her dance as an art form, Isadora eventually moved to London.   I presented a research paper entitled “Isadora Duncan’s Early Career in the United States,” at the Society of Dance History Scholars and the Congress on Research in Dance’s Joint Conference (2015) in Athens, Greece.
