     View Summary

Ludwig August Unzer (1748–1774) belongs to the rather forgotten German poets of the 18th century. However, during his short lifetime he became famous for his poetical experiments and was notorious for his critique of established poets like Gellert and Wieland. Together with Jakob Mauvillon (1743–1794) he published the so-called 'Letters on German Poets‘ (Ueber den Werth einiger Deutschen Dichter, 2 vols. 1771/72) which caused a sensation immediately after appearance. While in the first part Gellert's entire poetic oeuvre is critically dissected and dismantled, in the second part the authors rank the German poets by subjecting their poems to a comprehensive classification according to the aspects of an aesthetic of genius. The radicalism of this aesthetic approach is reflected in the largely devastating criticism that the Letters received in the relevant review organs. However, some judgments, such as by Goethe, reveal that these 'Letters on German Poets' written according to the Socratic method can be considered in retrospect as a 'ferment' of a provocative criticism in the spirit of Genius aesthetics and as a harbinger of the 'Sturm and Drang' movement.Another aspect of my research was Unzer's philosophical legacy. During my research I was able to find a copy of Unzer's lost work 'Vermächtnisse für Zweifler' (transl. Legacies for Doubters) in the Royal Library of Denmark in Copenhagen. It is an anonymous publication which couldn't be found in any other library anywhere until now. However, the correspondence of Jakob Mauvillon finally informs me about the authorship of this treatise. In my publication about that unknown text I show that this small pamphlet can be regarded as the religious-philosophical testament of the poet.

Jakob Mauvillon (1743-1794) was an important figure in the radical German Enlightenment. A literary critic and author or translator of works on religion, philosophy, political economy, gender, Freemasonry and history, he corresponded with many other thinkers in Germany and in France. Though he published on a wide range of topics, and was a prolific reviewer, detailed study of his works is scant. There is only one now outdated monograph on his work as a whole (published in 1981). More recently, however, it has become apparent that he is in fact a key figure of the radical Enlightenment in Germany. He has attracted increasing notice in the scholarly literature in the field. It is in line with this rising interest that together with two German scholars, Dieter Huening and Gideon Stiening, I organized a conference devoted to Mauvillon in Wolfenbuettel on 10-11 October 2019. The plenary speaker was the leading historian of the German radical Enlightenment, Martin Mulsow. It is now well recognized that much of the work of Enlightenment in general, and the radical Enlightenment in particular, was done in networks of private correspondence. Mauvillon’s letters are thus a part of the wider network of correspondences in the period, which were a key medium in the propagation of Enlightenment ideas and values. Most of his correspondence is unpublished. In my research project I collected, transcribed and analysed the correspondence of Mauvillon archived in the Herzog August library and in the state library in Wolfenbuettel. Together with Kevin Hilliard, professor emeritus for German literature at Oxford University, I work on a commented edition of Mauvillon’s correspondences that will make a significant contribution to the study of the circulation of ideas in the Enlightenment in general, and the radical Enlightenment in particular.

Heinrich Friedrich von Diez (1751-1817) is today most famous for being consulted by Goethe for his research on the West-Eastern Divan. However, being a philosopher, diplomat and Orientalist, Diez also exchanged letters with other important personalities of his time. So far, only a very small part of his extensive correspondence has been published. His correspondents include Johann Wolfgang Goethe and the Anacreontic poet Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim, the publisher and bookseller Friedrich Nicolai, the Orientalist and librarian Oluf Gerhard Tychsen, the diplomat Christian Konrad Wilhelm Dohm and the libertarian philosopher and economist Jakob Mauvillon. In my research project I collected, transcribed and analysed the correspondence of Heinrich Friedrich von Diez. In 2018, I already published an edition of Diez’ unknown philosophical treatise, reviews and some of his letters to Friedrich Nicolai and H.A.O. Reichard. The aim is to prepare a commented critical edition of Diez’ entire correspondence for the series “Werkprofile” published by de Gruyter. During my research I visited Berlin State Library to collect and transcribe the correspondence with Friedrich Nicolai and with the Prussian Minister Ewald Friedrich Graf von Hertzberg. I also studied documents about Diez’ diplomatic activity in Constantinople between 1786 and 1790 archived in Berlin. The results of the research have been published in scholarly journals, and will feed into the edition of Diez’ correspondence.

In 18th century Germanliterature, the South Seas, especially Tahiti, repeatedly has been referred toas an “exotic” or even “blissfull island”. Some years after Bougainville’s Voyageautour du monde and Forster’s Voyage around the World, several poems on the island in theSouth Seas were published (as by Zachariae and Bouterwek), and in a series ofscholarly journals, excerpts and reviews of travel accounts were made availablethat sought to combine the descriptions of the islanders with generalstatements about human nature. In my research project I investigated the travel accounts published in journalsor as monographs. At Berlin State Library, I studied articles published injournals like “Olla Potrida”, “Auserlesene Bibliothek der neuesten deutschenLitteratur” or “Chronologen”. On the other hand, I studied the first monographson Tahiti, which have been overlooked by researchers for a long time, as for example Poncelin de la Roche-Tilhac’s History of Revolutionson Tahiti with a Description of the State Constitution, the Customs, Arts andReligion of its Inhabitants (1782), and Edouard Taitbout deMarigny’s Essai sur l’isle d’Otahiti (1772, germ. transl. 1783). Whilestudying these texts on the background of Rousseaus’s philosophy and Diderot’s criticalcommentary on the Bougainville, I came to the conclusion that the discourse of Pacificismcan be regarded in opposition to the Orientalism, as described by Edward Said.

In my research on the Enlightenment journal "Magazin der deutschen Critik" I tried to ascertain the identity behind the ciphered initials and to name the contributors of that journal.  The "Magazin der deutschen Critik" was published in Halle in four double-volumes between 1772 and 1776. It was the continuation of the "Deutsche Bibliothek der schönen Wissenschaften", founded by Christian Adolph Klotz (1738–1771). After Klotz' sudden death in Dec. 1771, Gottlob Benedikt Schirach (1743–1804) became chief editor of the journal which was published under the name "Magazin der deutschen Critik". It is of special interest because of its positive reception of the German Sturm-und-Drang movement. Although some of the former collaborators of the "Deutsche Bibliothek der schönen Wissenschaften" continued to contribute for the new "Magazin", other authors switched the editor and contributed for the newly founded "Auserlesene Bibliothek der neuesten deutschen Litteratur", published in Lemgo between 1772 and 1781. During my research trip to Germany I studied 18th century periodicals at Berlin University and Berlin State library and gave a presentation at a conference on Heinrich Friedrich von Diez.
