    　ハロルド・ピンターは劇作家であるが、一方で映画脚本も数多く著している。彼の映画脚本は他の作家による小説を脚色したものであり、演劇―小説―映画という芸術３分野の繋がりを探るには良い研究材料である。当特定課題研究では、プルーストによる小説「失われた時を求めて」の映画化を前提としてピンターが書いた脚本を取り上げ、原作と脚本の構成を比較検討した。　方法論として、次の３点を重視した。１．このピンター脚本は映画化されずに終わったため、脚本と小説との詳細な比較は｢書かれた文字」という枠組みの中で行った。しかし研究全体の枠組みとして、映画論を採用した。２．小説｢失われた時を求めて」の長さ、文体、あるいは内容を考えると、この小説を脚本化する事自体にある種の｢無理」がある。その｢無理｣がピンターによってどのように処理されているかを分析する過程で、他のピンター作品に見られない特徴をこの脚本に見出す事を研究のねらいとした。従って、分析に際し、この脚本とピンターの演劇作品との関係、またピンターによる他の映画脚本との関係にも言及した。３．複数の芸術分野同士の比較研究において陥りやすい危険の一つとして、比較作品のどれをも深く論じないまま安易に全てを並列させるという傾向がしばしば指摘される。それを避けるためにも、良質の参考文献に恵まれた小説をピンター脚本と比較させる事が望ましかったが、プルースト作品はその条件を満たしていた。今回の研究では、批評理論の立場からプルーストを解釈した文献を参照する一方で、より伝統的な立場からのプルースト作品論も参照した。また、作品の朗読資料も参考とした。尚、ピンターに関する文献は大半を既に読んでいたが、さらに今回、大英図書館において関連文献を閲覧する事ができた。　比較検討の結果、ピンター脚本の構成は、プルーストの小説から少数のテーマを厳選した上でそのテーマを繰り返し登場させ、独自に展開させ、それによって物語の｢メタ物語」化をほぼ成功させたものであると分かった。まとめた論文は「英文学」第８４号（早稲田大学英文学会、２００２年９月発行）に掲載された。
