    In this research I examine the role of education in the family strategies of recent Chinese migrants in Japan, contributing to intellectual debates around transnationalism and the contemporary Chinese diaspora. Empirically, the research provides an insight into the changes of family structure. I also attempt to understand the particular role that family member play within. I emphasize the significance of different forms of capital in underpinning the spatial strategies of Chinese families. The research was conducted in Japan, Canada and China, involving in-depth interviews with Chinese workers and their families. In conclusion, I maintain that a theory of family role structure and its relationship to the family unit can help elucidate recent patterns of transnational mobility

  • Computer-assisted instruction(CAI) system by use of the internet for self-teaching of pronouncing the Chinese tones

    The pattern of change in voice pitch is used as visual cues in the computer-assisted instruction(CAI) system by use of the internet for self-teaching of pronouncing the Chinese tones. For the visual display, fifteen kinds of combinations of the four tones in standardized voice pitch patterns of disyllabic words were drawn on the musical scale with six whole tones, and presented along with the measured voice pitch pattern of the speech samples. For the speech samples, the disyllabic word lists pronounced only with voiced sound source were edited, and the measured voice pitch patterns not interrupted by unvoiced consonants were presented. These visual displays made easier for the beginners to perceive the tonal features.

  • Issues and new possibilities of multi-cultural exchange in long-distance communication among sphere of Chinese

    The main purpose of this study is to clarify possibilities of new class-form in long distance communication by analyzing conversation characteristics between students and native speakers after analyzing realities of students and native speakers objectively. Through 3 years of study period, over a million characters of conversation corpus was constructed by translation to words of videos which was taken in long-distance classes and regular classes. Measured analysis is possible to instantaneously retrieve contents of conversation according to mother tongue, topics, and class-forms. The main results of my study are shown below.
    1) Study of class form.
    Feature of communications of students and learning-style have been verified by analyzing dialogs between students and native speakers in long-distance classes and regular classes. Long-distance communication through videoconferencing has difficulties to share atmosphere between two places and it can easily cause hinder on communication. So that, it is necessary to indicate that teacher should better devote on coordinator or supporter, and close examination of class theme, use multi-exchange channel together, concern which teaching tool to be used and etc have been concretely proposed.
    2) Research of language acquisition.
    The tendencies and the cause of grammatical usage condition was analyzed through conversation corpus between students and native speakers by investigation on it comprehensively. Long-distance communication may cause crosswire between psychological pressure and grammatical proficiency and it may influence students in use of language. Also, high frequencies of utterance are tending to be simplified and it may cause lower evaluation of language ability, which can be seen in student Filler.
    3) Research of cross cultural communication
    Long-distance communication is also a place of cross cultural communication. It is important to have more chances of cross cultural communication. However, to prevent unnecessary cultural collision, you should use familiar topic to be a theme.It can be seen in videoconference that testees are tendency to be those who speaking by proxy about their culture under a assumption of "I belongs to a certain category". It has pointed out that using peer-to-peer video chat at the same time is also important to prompt individual levels of exchange.
    The corpus which was used through the study needs few more steps to opening to the public from the point of protection of privacy.

    We have developed the teaching program focusing on Chinese language communication skills with Beijing University and National Taiwan Normal University. In 2002,we started the the lesson distribution on Internet and in 2003 we developed the class management platform (http://www.tcwaseda.net/tc/), the instructor training methods, test editing system. In 2004,we have completed the language training programs such as composition drills and the Call drills on the web.
    In 2004,136 courses of Beijing University and 84 courses of National Taiwan Normal University were broadcasted online at Waseda University as regular credited courses. In 2005,216 courses of Beijing and 144 courses of Taiwan have been delivered to 250 students. These students scored 10% higher on average in 2003 in the assessment test and 20% higher in the following year of 2004.
    We held the conference named The Symposium on the Chinese Cross-Cultural Distance Learning in December 2003,inviting over 40 scholars from Institute of Computational Linguistics (ICL), Peking University, National Taiwan Normal University, and Korea University. Since 2004,we have held Chinese Corpus Conference five times at Waseda University.

  • A Study on Japanese Transcription and Systemization of Chinese Names of Places and People Based on Their Chinese Pronunciations

    Our research project results in as follows :1. Refined system of j-pinyin :(1)The system of j-pinyin (a mapping from Chinese syllabaries to Japanese ones) was meticulously rearranged, based on results of the hearing experiments for the last two years, mainly with respect several confusable syllables.(2)j-pinyin was also partially changed from the overall point of view.(3)Final hearing experiments were made in China in Daliang with the help of 10 male students and 10 female students as subject, to confirm the validity of j-pinyin. Results showed the almost part of j-pinyin system was enough valid. J-pinyin table was made public in print.2. Implementing a prototype system to support inputting Chinese names of places and people :(1)Protptype database system of Chinese names of places and people was implemented.(2)Survey was made to clarify problems of previous Chinese character input methods.(3)A new method to input Chinese characters was proposed to retrieve the database.(4)Chinese experts reviewed the new input method so that the validity of it could be confirmed.3. Contribution of research results to the society :(1)The research results was adopted as a journal paper in Terminology Standardization & Information Technology and also invited to submit it as a Newsletter in East Asia Forum on Terminology. Moreover, the table of j-pinyin was adopted in the course of NHK Television Linguistic Course (Chinese) as a text material

  • Dictionary and Intelligent Retrieval Support System for Transcription of Chinese Syllables into Japanese Katakana

    (1)Optimization of a system of the Chinese syllabary in Japanese Katakana characters ("j-pinyin") : We optimized our systematic mapping method, we call the table mapped by this method "j-pinyin", from the Chinese syllabaries to the Japanese syllabaries, based on some hearing experiments by a few dozens of Chinese native speakers in China. Other results of this project are based on this j-pinyin, which is gradually being adopted by e. g., NHK's Linguistic Course of this fiscal year.(2)Contents producing and evaluating for Chinese-Japanese syllabary mapping dictionary : Place names famous for sight-seeing (477 words) and person names famous/important in the society (51 family names and 45 first names) were exhaustively gathered from sight-seeing books and some materials on China. These words are stored in a computer by use of ACCESS2000. Evaluation of the contents showed fundamental validity.(3)Implementation and Evaluation of intelligent retrieval support system : We proposed a new input method of Chinese characters which realize multi-looking-up ways, not only by the roman pinyin, radicals/characters and the number of stokes of Chinese characters, but also by graphical similarity of Japanese and Chinese characters etc. so that Japanese people unfamiliar with Chinese language can look up Chinese characters. The validity of those input methods was also confirmed.(4)Evaluation the system and contents as Chinese-Japanese syllabaries mapping dictionary : Unification of the input support system and the contents was done with use of HTML, php, VB and MySQL. Japanese IME was adopted to input 4,402 Chinese characters in the code tables of GB2313, and the methods described in 4 was adopted to input 2,361 Chinese characters at the same time.(5)Evaluation of the system as web services : A web server was configured to make the services on a network. Tests with on-line manuals was showed fundamental validity.(6)Overall evaluation : The results of inquiry tests showed the validity of view on a display, operationability and functionalities

  • A Research on Intercultural adjustment Chinese students in Japan and Japanese students in China

    It has been about thirty years since China started the open-door policy, when the number of students coming to study in Japan started to increase. Along with the Japanese Government's policy of accepting 100,000 foreign students, students from China have become the largest group of the foreign students' body. On the other hand, Japanese students have become the second largest group among foreign students in China, as Japan and China have developed closer cooperative ties. This study aimed at painting a precise picture of intercultural adjustment of both Chinese students in Japan and Japanese students in China in the time when environment around them have changed drastically.There were three major characteristics in this study.First, it employed an interactive research method. Students' experiences in both Japan and China were examined from a comparative perspective, thus more objective evaluation became possible. Second, longitudinal research of three years made us possible to grasp the day-by-day variation of the process of intercultural adjustment. Third, participatory approach enhanced the effectiveness of this research. All members of the research team were involved in education and counseling for foreign students. Furthermore, students who became the target of the research also actively participated in the research by recommending improvements for policies on foreign students and intercultural programs. The credibility of the survey result was strengthened, while trustful relations had been built between those who researched and those who were researched.There are three points in the major accomplishment of the research. First, it could accumulate huge quantities of questionnaire result, students' diaries, interview notes, and minutes of workshops. Second, it made a comparison of the first generation and the second generation of students from China and Japan, thereby revealed problems and adjustment strategies of respective generations. Third, the effectiveness of a new approach for studying abroad, double-degree program, was tested. The accomplishment of this research is expected to be widely utilized in research on foreign students in the future

  • 日中双方留学生の異文化適応の実態に関する通時的調査

     本研究は日中双方の留学生が異文化適応のプロセスに関する通時的研究であるため、留学前、留学中と留学後の全過程を長期間の持続調査が必要である。2004年度の研究はその予備調査の段階に当たる。 本年度の主な成果は以下の5点:  ①研究協力チームの組織作り。A)2005年度北京大学や復旦大学のダブル・ディグリーやTSAプログラムに参加予定の日本人学生チーム;B)中国大陸や台湾など中国語圏から本大学国際教養学部に来ている留学1年生チーム;C)中国から早稲田大学及び慶応大学に来ている院生チーム;D)日本語学校に通う就学生など四つのチームを組織化し、留学生自身が参加可能な研究組織を作った。 ②チームリーダを通して、横断的予備調査(アンケート)及び縦断的予備調査(追跡インタビューや留学日誌)を実施した。特に上述Aチームに対しては留学前の準備段階からデータの収集を取り組み、分析を加えた。今後ダブル・ディグリープログラムを推進するための基礎資料として蓄積してきた。 ③データベースの構築。調査で得た文字資料及び映像資料のデータベース化を試みた。将来、調査対象の増加や調査期間の長期化に備え、大量なデータを瞬時にグループ別、テーマ別に検索し、統計分析の簡便性を図った。 ④中国人留学生のインタビュー内容に基づき、「留学生的心声」という異文化理解の教科書を出版した。 ⑤北京、上海の提携校及び早稲田大学北京事務所スタッフの研究協力を得て、長期にわたる持続研究の環境を整えた。  本研究で得た基礎的データは今後留学プログラムの企画や実施に深く寄与し、また、留学生自身による研究協力チームの運営経験が彼ら今後の留学生活においても活用可能である。例えば、学習相互支援、異文化環境適応及び危機管理などの面でのネットワーク機能が期待できる。 なお、本研究の成果に基づき、より広いテーマで、今年度の文部科学省科研費の申請をしている。
