  • Celebrity endorsements in Japan and the United States: Is negative information all that harmful?

    R. Bruce Money, Terence A. Shimp, Tomoaki Sakano

    Journal of Advertising Research   46 ( 1 ) 113 - 123  2006

     View Summary

This research involves a comparative study conducted in the United States and Japan to investigate whether the form of negative information about a celebrity (other- or self-oriented) results in differential evaluations of the brand endorsed by the celebrity. Surprisingly, we find that both Japanese and Americans view endorsed products more positively in the presence of self-oriented negative information, a possible suspension of the famous fundamental attribution error in human judgment. Implications for advertising practitioners are discussed.

  • Relational exchange in US-Japanese marketing strategic alliances

Kevin E. Voss, Jean L. Johnson, John B. Cullen, Tomoaki Sakano, Hideyuki Takenouchi

    INTERNATIONAL MARKETING REVIEW   23 ( 6 ) 610 - 635  2006  [Refereed]

     View Summary

Purpose - To develop and test a new model of relational exchange in marketing-oriented non-equity international strategic alliances.
Design/methodology/approach - The model is tested using a sample of 97 matched dyads of US and Japanese firms in the electronics industry. The model was tested using three stage least squares.
Findings - The data generally support the proposed model for both nations/cultures. The results suggest that the benevolence dimension of trust is a more important determinant of managerially assessed alliance marketing performance for the Japanese firms relative to their US partners.
Research limitations/implications - While strong inferences are inhibited by the nature of our data set, our research implies that cultural sensitivity is an important determinant of the credibility and benevolence dimensions of trust and quality information exchange. Also, exchanging quality information is a strong mediator of the trust-performance relationship.
Practical implications - International marketing managers should be focused on the process of developing high levels of alliance marketing performance. Our results suggest that this performance can be linked, at least in part, to the exchange of relevant, timely, important information. Information exchange in turn depends on the development of trust and cultural sensitivity in the relationship.
Originality/value - This paper integrates the cultural sensitivity construct into a relational exchange model of international alliances, demonstrating the importance of being open to, and understanding of, culturally driven operational differences. The important behavioral construct we call quality information exchange is a mediator in the relational exchange model, an improvement over models that include only relational constructs such as trust and commitment.

  • Overcoming informal trade barriers among Japanese intermediaries: An attitudinal assessment

Kenneth C. Gehrt, Sherry Lotz, Soyeon Shim, Tomoaki Sakano, Naoto Onzo

    Agribusiness   21 ( 1 ) 53 - 63  2005

     View Summary

Access to foreign markets is increasingly critical to the U.S. as global competition increases. Past efforts by the U.S. to penetrate the Japanese market have often focused on overcoming formal trade barriers including tariffs, quotas, and product standards. Although this form of intervention has enjoyed success, limited effort has been devoted to analyzing informal trade barriers. This study examines informal trade barriers in terms of the attitudes of Japanese distributors toward U.S. products. The study focuses on a product-market for which Japan is the leading single-country importer for the U.S.: fruit. Recent inroads into the Japanese market by other countries have eroded the position of the U.S. This erosion will continue unless U.S. exporters can develop appropriate strategies based on sound market intelligence. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. • Drivers and outcomes of parent company intervention in IJV management: a cross-cultural comparison

JL Johnson, JB Cullen, T Sakano, JW Bronson

    JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH   52 ( 1 ) 35 - 49  2001.04  [Refereed]

     View Summary

This study focused on an important issue in international joint venture (IJV) management-the motivations for and outcomes of parent company intervention into the affairs of the IJV, specifically in the form of control processes. The paper reports on IJVs between Japanese companies and firms from other Asian and Western national cultures. The study considered two forms of parental control: direct, where the parent overtly dictates and meddles in ITV operations and decision-making, and indirect, which involves a more consultative relationship between the parent and IJV. Motivations for control included IJV experience, strategic importance, product similarity, and resource dependence. As an outcome of parent control of the IJV, the study looked at conflict between partners and conflict between the IJV's managers and their parent company. Results suggested significant variance in control by national culture for the effects on control of IJV experience, strategic importance, product similarity, and resource dependence. The effects of control on conflict also varied by national culture. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

  • Retail buyer beliefs, attitude and behavior toward pioneer and me-too follower brands - A comparative study of Japan and the USA

    F Alpert, M Kamins, T Sakano, N Onzo, J Graham

    INTERNATIONAL MARKETING REVIEW   18 ( 2 ) 160 - 187  2001  [Refereed]

     View Summary

One potential source of pioneer brand advantage is retail buyers 'preference for pioneer brands. A model of pioneer brand advantage with retailers developed in the USA was tested in Japan, as a replication and cross-cultural extension This provides the first empirical study of Japanese retail buyer beliefs, attitude, and behavior toward new offerings, and the first direct statistical comparison of US and Japanese retail buying behavior in the marketing literature Similarities and differences in pioneer brand advantage with retailers between Japan and the USA are discussed Results from a survey of buyers from Japan's largest supermarket chains suggest that pioneer brand advantage is about as strong for them as for their LIS counterparts, though for somewhat different reasons. The survey's results were analyzed in two ways (through a multiattribute attitude model and a PLS causal model), with results that complement and corroborate one another. Data were standardized to deal with potential extreme response style bias.

  • Success through commitment and trust: The soft side of strategic alliance management

John B. Cullen, Jean L. Johnson, Tomoaki Sakano

    Journal of World Business   35 ( 3 ) 223 - 240  2000

     View Summary

This article argues that the success of international strategic alliances requires attention not only to the hard side of alliance management (e.g., financial issues and other operational issues) but, also, to the soft side. The soft side refers to the development and management of relationship capital in the alliance. Relationship capital consists of the socio-psychological aspects of the alliance that are positive and beneficial to the alliance. Two important areas of relationship capital are mutual trust and commitment. Based on our findings from two major studies of Japanese strategic alliances, we develop a dynamic model of trust and commitment based on mutual adjustments of alliance partners. We also show how the dynamics of trust and commitment affect the performance of international strategic alliances with the Japanese. The article concludes with a discussion of the managerial implications of our findings and the dynamic model. © 2000 Elsevier Science Inc.

  • Impact of CEO succession in Japanese companies: A coevolutionary perspective

    T Sakano, AY Lewin

    ORGANIZATION SCIENCE   10 ( 5 ) 654 - 671  1999.09  [Refereed]

     View Summary

In this paper, we set out to investigate whether strategic leadership matters at a moment in the life cycle of the firm when a change is made in the top leadership. By far, most of the conceptual and empirical literature on the consequences of CEO succession involves United States companies. Therefore, in this paper, we set out to investigate the impact of CEO succession on strategic and organizational changes in Japanese companies.
The empirical study consisted of a matched control group design involving 81 Japanese companies experiencing a CEO succession event and sl companies with continuity of their CEO leadership. The results of the study can be summarized as follows. Overall CEO succession was not associated with radical strategic and organization changes. Japanese companies did engage in evolutionary organization and strategic adaptations during the five year period of the study but independent of CEO succession. The governance structure moderates organization changes (independent of CEO succession) in particular when the firm was affiliated with a main bank and the firm was experiencing severe financial pressure.

We conducted interviews with design managers of automotive manufactures around the world. Based on the subsequent discussion and analysis, we successfully derived 9 major product design elements (such as aesthetics and sociality, etc.). We presented the findings at the AMA (American Marketing Association) Summer Educators’ Conference in 2015. After the additional interviews with US and domestic manufactures, we developed new scales for the product design elements and also developed a conceptual framework model. The model was tested and revealed the relationship between the product performance and the antecedent factors in new product development. The finding was presented as titled“The Impact of Product Design Elements on New Product Superiorities and Performances” in Winter AMA Conference in 2017

In our research activities, we have implemented both theoretical and field research at home and in foreign countries.
In theoretical researches, we have reviewed the internalization and transaction cost theories developed by Buckley and Casson, the industrial organization theory refined by Porter, the contingency approach reinforced by Bartlett and Ghoshal. And through such theoretical reviews, we have tried to establish some hypothetical dynamic theories adapted specifically for an Asian area and service industries.
We have implemented research surveys on various service industries such as retail, education, consultancy, IT, hospitality, transportation, bank, non-bank, advertisement, manufacturing and administrative agencies in major Asian cities(Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, Delhi, Bangalore, Bangkok, Ho Chi Ming City and Dubai.)
Moreover, aiming at the construction of new models and theories, we have invited some quest specialists to hold in-depth and extensive meetings.
Following points have been found as results of these activities.
    (1) The service multinationals(SMNs) of Japan, the US and Europe are unevenly distributed in Asia. For example, the foreign direct investment by European and US companies are remarkable in Dubai. In retail sector, the situation surrounding SMNs is very different between China and India.
    (2) Comparing to European and US SMNs' competitive advantages, Japanese SMNs' are far behind and weak. Knowledge management and IHRM are at most important for Japanese SMNs.
    (3) Governments in the Asian countries must plan and implement more open market policy to develop service industries. In particular, deregulation policy in retail, physical distribution and finance industries are important for India and inland China.
The research on SMNs is more popular in European and US academia than in Japan. The competitive advantages of Japanese SMNs are still in a very weak position. The research on SMNs in Japan should be enhanced further.

A longitudinal database of strategic and organizational changes for Japanese retail financial services companies was created during the period of 1945 and 2004. The database consists of publicly available accounts published in newspaper, magazines, and annual reports. Fine-grained text analysis was used to uncover the key characteristics of the change actions, such as type of change, location of change within the organization, outcomes, and espoused goals and rationales. In addition, measures of strategy types, strategic intent and organizational structure were captured.Based on the database, several empirical studies were performed. First, analysis using the U.S. database showed that expansion of regulation in sub-prime lending lead to the unintended result of reducing the flow of home equity credit to lower income and higher risk borrowers. Second, several factors which had impaired development of European consumer credit markets were found : strict regulation, risk-avoidance by financial institutions, and cultural and religious backgrounds. Among them the strongest impediment was the underdevelopment of credit bureaus. Third, two types of strategic changes by Japanese financial services companies were found in Asian countries : exploitation and exploration. We found exploitation more frequently than exploration in Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan. Forth, empirical analyses were performed on causes of personal bankruptcy in Japan. Life event such as reduced income was the strongest predictor for personal bankruptcy. Finally, two potential motives for Japanese financial services companies to expand abroad were found : They could seek resources, such as a capital, or they could pursue additional opportunities such as selling to their traditional customer segment in new markets or even to new segments in those new markets

We carried out our research on the subject of this project by teams as well as individuals for past three years. To put it specifically, we did research on subjects, such as. 'the role of SMNs (Service Multinationals) in the economic development of Asian countries,' 'the analysis of present state on service economy and SMNs in Asian countries,' 'strategy and management in SMNs in Asian countries and so forth. 'We could get much knowledge on the above subjects through such our research activities. To sum up, we could mainly have the following knowledge on the subjects of this project ; (1)Economy in Asian countries is partly shifting from manufacturing economy toward a knowledge based economy and service industry is increasingly growing there. (2)Foreign SMNs have been playing a large part in the growth of service industries in Asian countries. There have been already many foreign SMNs there. (3)The competition among foreign SMNs can be seen in Asian countries. It is essential for them to build their competitive advantage there. (4)'Invisible resource' such as, knowledge, information, is regarded as an important management resources or core competence for the growth or development for service industries or the building of competitive advantage of SMNs in Asian country. (5)The knowledge management will be important task for the building of competitive advantage of SMNs in Asian countries. As a result, we could not only grasp the actual situation of SMN in Asian countries, but also find a clue to build the theory and model of managerial behavior of SMN in a knowledge based economy in the 21^<st> century. In addition, we have already published many papers in several journals as the results of our research

The overall goal of this research project was to create s longitudinal data base of publicly available accounts published in newspaper, magazines, and annual reports for strategy changes and organizational restructurings in Japanese retailing, financial services and automobile industries between 1985 and 2001. Ultimately we attempted to search for the new dominant corporate strategies and organizational designs. After completing the data collection process, a restructuring classification grid was created. Each account is classified on two dimensions, type of change and locus of change in the organization. Next each account was analyzed in regards to creating and achieving capabilities of flexibility, adaptability and responsiveness and in terms of innovating organization forms and practices.Based on the database we performed several empirical studies. For example, we set out to investigate changes in marketing practices by European, Japanese and US firms after the Asian economic crisis. The nation-state form of capitalism created a system of constraints which affected the type and direction of changes. Japanese firms generally did not engage in radical changes. US firms were willing to engage in radical changes. European firms went between them. Also, we analyzed the impacts of rate ceiling introduced in June 2000 on strategy changes of Japanese financial services firms. The firms greatly intensified exploitation strategy responses relative to exploration responses. We furthermore found the mediating effect of size. Smaller firms tended to engaged in incremental strategic changes while larger firms implemented radical changes

The basic data for this database consists of the universe of accounts published in newspapers, magazines, and annual reports. Fine-grained text analysis was used to uncover the key characteristics of the changes actions, auch as type of change, location of change, location of change within the organization, outcomes, and espoused goals and rationales. In addition, measures of strategy type, strategic intent and organizational structure were capture. Using this database, we investigated the following topics :(1) the impact of OEO succession on strategic and organizational changes in Japanese companies : Overall OEO succession was not associated with radical strategic and organization changes. The governance structure moderates organization changes (independent of OEO succession) in particular when the firm was affiliated with a main bank and the firm was experiencing severe financial pressure. (2) the consequences of IT for organization design in US and Japanese retailers : In US, IT did predict structure when other variables were controlled, and is strongly associated with increased centralization. In Japan, IT modestly predicts structure in the absence of controls, and is associated with increased decentralization. (3) the framework for understanding changes in marketing practices by European, Japanese and U.S. companies in Sotheast Asia after Economic Crisis : We classified changes in marketing practices into two types : exploration and exploration. We found exploitation more frequently than exploration. Also, the nation state form of capitalism affected the type and direction of changes

Facing to the so-called global era, our studies on international inter-company cooperations are increasingly getting importance in the field of international business studies.Perceiving from such a general trend, through 1992, we were focusing on the theoretical analysis and survey of existing works throughout the world. We have held a regular meeting each month where we had exchanged our ideas actively and had invited a few experts to hear the state of artson the matters from different perspectives. Through such routine studies, we had absorbed many excellent and invaluable knowledges. Because recent phenomena are quite different from the traditional international inter-company cooperations, such activities also made us to aware the need for studying these issues from various, interdisciplinary viewpoints inevitable.Based on last year's such research findings, in 1993, each research member has continued to refocusing on model-building and theoretical restructuring. We have repeated the same routine activities as last year which had contributed to the further development of our own researches. We have actively presented our research findings in the form of articles and publications. Namely, K.Enatsu and Suto N.ed., Multinational Enterprises, Yachioshuppan, 1993, M.Sakuma, Innovation in Modern Business Administration, Nikkeishinbun, 1993 and special series articles on the issues published in Sekai Keizai Hyouron(the Journal of World Economy) from June 1993 to June 1994. We convince that we had shed light on many unsolved issues on international inter-company cooperations which are mostly untapped in the field of multinational enterprise and international business studies
